Ziggy
African Spurred Tortoise Centrochelys sulcata
Ziggy is one of our male African Spurred Tortoises that calls DRC home. Ziggy moved to his forever home on February 7th, 2022 with Speedy, another male Spurred Tortoise. Ziggy and Speedy were living at a nearby resort. When new owners took over the establishment, they didn't feel that they could adequately care for the tortoises and asked DRC to adopt them.
He enjoys getting a shower and having his shell scratched by his care takers. Visitors can sometime find Ziggy taking a break from the sun under his tiki hut of his burrow. Some days his caretakers bring him out for "walk-abouts" on the DRC grounds!
How old is Ziggy?
Can live 50-80 years, reaching maturity at around 10-15 years. Ziggy's age in unknown.
How big can Ziggy get?
Can grow over 30 inches long and weigh over 100lbs, same males have been close to 200lbs! Ziggy weighs about 140lbs.
What does Ziggy eat?
Ziggy is a herbivore, meaning his diets consists mostly of leafy greens and veggies. Ziggys favorite foods are cabbage, cooked sweet potatoes and pumpkin!
